Background:

Interleukin 5 (IL5) is a cytokine that acts as a growth and differentiation factor for B cells and eosinophils.  It is the primary regulator of eosinopoiesis as well as eosinophil maturation and activation.  Elevated levels of IL5 are linked to asthma and hypereosinophilic syndromes.  The receptor for IL5 is composed of a heterodimer, with the beta subunit capable of also binding to IL3 and colony stimulating factor 2.

Other Names:

RP23-239O19.2, Il-5, B-cell growth factor II, BCGF-II, Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte inducer, Eosinophil differentiation factor, T-cell replacing factor, TRF
